AFL details media betting restrictions

The Australian Football League (AFL) has released details of planned gambling restrictions on media accredited with the Aussie rules competition.

The league today (Monday) said that from the 2016 season, media betting on matches and events will be confined to a certain period of time of match days.

Instead of a blanket ban on all matches and events, accredited media will have a partial ban in them at a time when they are “working or present” at a game.

Media personnel will not be able to place bets during a two-hour period before matches or during the game itself.

Restrictions will extend to more than 1,000 AFL-accredited journalists, radio and television reporters, photographers, cameramen and production staff.

The AFL said that the new regulations come as part of a response to the abuse of sensitive information surrounding team selections, injuries and tactics.
