Interwetten CEO Becher to depart

Malta-based iGaming operator Interwetten CEO Werner Becher has confirmed he will leave the company at the end of this year.

Becher has led the European online sports betting operator for seven years, having joined from Austrian IT service provider Adesso, where he also served as CEO.

Interwetten, which is primarily active in the German, Austrian and Swiss markets, has yet to give details about Becher’s replacement, with a spokesperson telling iGamingBusiness.com that it would announce further information in the coming days.

Confirming his departure on LinkedIn, Becher said he informed Interwetten’s employees about his decision on Wednesday.

“In seven very successful years, we managed together to more than double turnover to €1.5bn, based on very high profitability,” he said.

“I'm looking forward to ramping up a new challenge in 2019 and I’d like to thank everyone at Interwetten for the fun, energy and support provided on this particular journey.”

The new chief executive will lead Interwetten through its launch in Sweden’s re-regulated market, with the company having been one of the first to apply for a licence ahead of January’s opening.

Interwetten claims to have around 1.8 million customers in a range of different markets.

It is already licensed in Malta, Italy, Spain, Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) and Ireland. In Germany, Interwetten it has also applied for one of the online sports betting licences to be awarded under the now-discredited State Treaty on Gambling, though the status of these licences remain in limbo.
