BGC urges new DCMS boss Dorries to continue “evidence-led” gambling reform

In her new position, Dorries will lead the ongoing review into the 2005 Gambling Act, which will address a number of different facets of the industry- including gambling protections for under 25s and both online and land-based gambling.

Michael Dugher, chief executive of the BGC, said that Dorries’ appointment was “well deserved”.

“On behalf of the 119,000 people whose jobs are supported by our members – from the high street to hospitality, from tourism to tech – I’d like to congratulate Nadine Dorries on her well-deserved promotion as Secretary of State for DCMS,” said Dugher.

Dugher also emphasised the importance of DCMS in striking the correct balance in its Gambling Act review, callinf for an “evidence-led approach”.

“We have been working extremely closely with the DCMS over very many months to help the Government find the right balance in the Gambling Review, so that we continue to drive big changes and higher standards on safer gambling to better protect the most vulnerable, whilst at the same time ensuring that the millions of people who enjoy an occasional flutter perfectly safely and responsibly have the freedom to do so,” continued Dugher.

“It is vital the Government continues with its evidence-led approach.”

Previously, Dorries held the role of Minister of State for Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and Patient Safety.

Also in the reshuffle, John Whittingdale, who oversaw the UK gambling industry, was removed from his role of Minister for Media and Data within DCMS.

It is currently unknown who will take over Whittingdale’s position or the gambling brief within the department.
