Swedish FA cancels league game after match-fixing attempt

The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) has postponed a scheduled football league game between Goteborg and AIK after an alleged match-fixing attempt.

The Allsvenskan top-tier league meeting was due to take place yesterday (Thursday), but the SvFF moved to suspend the game after the allegations came to light.

According to the Associated Press news agency, the SvFF said an unnamed AIK player was offered a “substantial amount” if he agreed to “actively contribute to the club losing the evening’s planned match”.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported that Goteborg said its goalkeeper was also approached with regard to helping fix the match.

SvFF general secretary Hakan Sjostrand described the match-fixing attempt as a “very serious attack against Swedish football”, adding that the country will “never, never accept it”.
