Cyprus to consult on unified self-exclusion platform

The Cyprus National Betting Authority has launched a public consultation on its proposal to establish a unified self-exclusion platform in the country.

The new platform would cover all forms of gambling in Cyprus, with operators that hold online betting or land-based betting licences in the country required to participate in the scheme.

Players would be able to register with the platform and exclude themselves from all licensed operators. This would mean that if a player had more than one gambling account, a single registration would stop them from accessing any regulated offering across every channel.

Operators would also need to ensure that any consumers who have opted into the scheme do not receive any marketing materials related to gambling.

Registration would be open for Cypriot citizens, as well as people from European Union and non-EU countries over the age of 18, who participate in or intend to gamble with licensed bookmakers in Cyprus.

“The purpose of the platform is to provide access to a strong tool in order to empower players who acknowledge their problematic betting behaviour and help them prevent any kind of pathological behaviour,” the Authority said.

“Consequently, players and vulnerable groups are protected, enhancing a healthy social structure.”

The public consultation will run until 24 July, with all industry stakeholders invited to give their opinions on the proposal.
