Senet Group declares support for statutory levy plans in UK
The Senet Group has said that it would support a statutory levy in the UK, if this were to help tackle issues surrounding problem gambling.
Recent media reports have suggested that UK gambling companies could face a statutory levy, with this to replace the National Responsible Gambling Strategy.
The current system is based on voluntary funding for research, education, and treatment (RET) of problem gambling and related concerns.
Last month, the Remote Gambling Association urged the UK government to look at a statutory levy, saying that the current system is “no longer fit for purpose”.
The Senet Group has now said it would also back the plans, if it became apparent that this was the “only way to generate the money needed for work across the RET agenda”.
Senet Group chair Gillian Wilmot said: “The Senet Group is committed to working in partnership across the industry to raise standards and improve player protection.
“Our responsible gambling messaging, ‘When the Fun Stops, Stop’, seeks to educate and inform players and their families and friends about moderation when gambling.
“Our campaign has over 80% recognition rates and evidence shows that it changes behaviours for the better; this is a significant element in the range of activities delivered under the ‘Research, Education and Treatment’ banner.
“If a statutory levy on gambling businesses is the only way to generate the money needed for work across the RET agenda, then this change has our support.
“Senet can play a valuable role in delivering research and education messaging which creates player behavioural change and reduces the risk of problem gambling.”
